| In an ongoing attempt to keep athletes informed, it was deemed necessary to highlight the aspects around the GNT provincial team selection for triathlon and duathlon.
Currently the constitution states that an athlete must be registered with TSA through a province at least 10 (ten) days prior to the provincial championships in order to qualify to represent the province at the national championships. Currently GNT accept registrations up to the day of the race. Just as an overview to selection criteria. Registration with GNT does not automatically include an athlete in the provincial team. The primary requirement is that the athlete participate in the provincial championships presented by GNT. If an athlete is unable to participate at the provincial championships but would still like to be considered for selection, the athlete needs to advise the selection committee in writing before the event stating the reason why he/she will be unable to participate. This does not mean that the athlete will automatically be included in the provincial team however. The selection committee will look at the athletes past performances and more specifically at consistency and level of performance with a focus on the last 6 months leading up to the provincial championships. The selection committee might require an athlete to compete in an alternate event in order to obtain a result to give an indication of an athletes form. In such an instance, it is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that the selection committee receive the relevant result. Other factors that are taken into account are whether the athlete was selected to represent the province and/or national team in the previous season. There are instances where an athlete falls ill the day before the race or on the day of the race and under these circumstances, application can be made to the selection committee for consideration to be included in the provincial team up to the day of the selection committee meeting. These late applications should be accompanied by a medical note where applicable. If an athlete starts the race at the provincial event and fails to complete the event due to whatever reason, he/she can also apply to the selection committee to be included for selection consideration and the same process as for athletes who were not able to participate will apply. The selection process does not have the rigid rules that qualifying criteria has, but the guidelines are similar to those used by TSA for national selection. Currently GNT select the top 6 (six) athletes in each age category that fall loosely within 10 percent of the winning time for that specific age group. This means that if there are 10 athletes in a particular group and the winning time was 2 hours, the first five athletes would be selected provided the last of them finished in less than 2hrs 12 min. This is a rough guide to the actual process and they are guidelines and not rules as was mentioned earlier. |
